Biography

C. Douglas Witherspoon, M.D.

Doug Witherspoon is a Board Certified Opthalmologist with additional medical training and clinical expertise as a vitreoretinal surgeon and ocular trauma specialist. His training and experience enable Dr. Witherspoon to perform a wide variety of clinical evaluations and surgical procedures related to the retina and vitreous.

Originally from Springfield, Missouri, Dr. Witherspoon received his medical degree from the St. Louis University Schoool of Medicine in 1977. He completed his Medicine Internship in St. Louis, and a three year Opthalmology Residency at The Eye Foundation Hospital/University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1982, Dr. Witherspoon completed a Clinical Fellowship at the Vitreoretinal Research Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee.

A leader and innovator in the development of new treatment techniques for retinal disease, Dr. Witherspoon has been a significant contributor to the medical research community with over 100 major medical publications and presentations to his credit. He is Professor of Opthalmology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Executive Director of the United States Eye Injury Registry, and Director of Clinical Research for the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation. He serves as a Federal Appointee to the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Advisory Committee for Injury Prevention and Control and the Secondary Grants Review Committee of the CDC. He is the senior standing member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Eye Safety and Sports Ophthalmology Committee and the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Honor Award. He has received the Vitreous Society 1997 Honor Award. Through these efforts, Dr. Witherspoon continues to bring new insight and understanding to those involved in treating retinal injuries and disorders.

Since 1982, Dr. Witherspoon has made his home in Birmingham.
